At Trinity we have adopted a modern approach to teaching which involves and recognises the use of technology in an academic environment.  The model Trinity has implemented is that of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), essentially students bring an electronic device to school to use for academic purposes.

Trinity provides:

  • A high speed internet connection

  • An email account with a Trinity domain (example@trinity.nsw.edu.au)

  • A Google account

  • Cloud storage via Google drive (10TB capacity)

The minimum specifications for your BYOD are as follows:

Hardware

Device Type:

  • Notebook/Laptop, Tablet or convertible device.

  • A tablet device should have a physical keyboard attachment and keys must move when physically depressed.

  • NB: Smart phones are not considered an appropriate personal computing device for the purpose of learning in the classroom.

Screen Size:

  • Minimum screen size is 10” (~25cm)

  • Recommended maximum screen size is 14” (~35cm)

Operating System

  • Operating System can be any of:

       > Microsoft Windows 7 or later

       > Apple Mac OSX 10.7 or later

       > Apple iOS 6 or later

       > Android 4.2 or later

       > No Chromebooks

Wireless compatibility

  • Device must have 5GHz 802.11n support.

  • This may be advertised as “Dual Band Wireless”, “802.11abgn”, “802.11agn”, “802.11ac” or “Gigabit Wireless”.

  • Devices sold as “802.11bgn” probably do not support the required standard.

  • NB: Devices with 2.4GHz only are not supported.

  • Weight

  • Recommended weight <2kg as it will be carried in a bag each day.

  • Battery performance

  • Battery life should be greater than six hours.

  •

  • NB: There will be limited facilities for charging available at School.

  • Solid State Drives (SSD)

  • Recommended disk drives for notebooks/laptops are solid state disk (SSD).

  • Accessories

  • A protective cover or case is required.

  • Considerations

  • The requirements of the subjects being studied and how the device will be used.  If your son is studying a subject in the Creative Arts (Drama, Music, Visual Arts) or Technological and Applied Studies facilities then you may be advised to have a particular feature or functionality in your son’s device to support his course and project work.  Please contact the relevant Head of Department for course specific requirements.

  •

  • Purchasing an extended warranty for the device at time of purchase.

  •

  • Accidental loss and breakage insurance.

  •

  • This is a personal device, so consider how else it will be used.  Availability of games, peripherals, connections to other devices and use within the home network all help define which device will be best for your child.

  •

  • Browser

  • Any of:

  • > Internet Explorer 11 or later

  • > Safari 7 or later

  • > Chrome 37 or later

  • > Firefox 31 or later
